Conscious Capitalism - Working Definition

May 19th, 2007 at 12:03 pm

I woke up from a dream this week with a clearer understanding of Conscious Capitalism. A less technical one than what has been proposed before.

It started with what capitalism has become at the end of the 20th century - Unconscious Capitalism

Unconscious Capitalism had no concern or conflict with the taking advantage of people (employers, communities, or consumers) or the planet (locally or holistically) in the name of profit or shareholder value.

Conscious Capitalism is an awakening to capitalism now being a truly symbiotic relationship where all stakeholders benefit or suffer because of the actions or inactions of one of the components.

The emergence of Conscious Capitalism has leveled the playing field.

Conscious Capitalism becomes an active practice of the “Platinum Rule.” - “Do unto others as THEY would do unto themselves”

In Conscious Capitalism we need each other for our very survival.

Welcome

This site was created following a presentation of “Making The World Round Again” at Northland Bioneers Conference. This presentation shared how both locally and globally a new way of doing business is emerging in the world, a new form of capitalism - conscious capitalism.

I welcome contributing stories about companies doing business right. This site has been created for the expressed purpose of sharing stories and examples of businesses that are doing business right and are moving toward conscious capitalism.

There are very few if any companies who have fully embraced this concept, however, many are making significant movement in that direction. Even in the large corporations that have historically been demonized for being blatantly unconscious are starting to do some astounding things, which in my opinion can’t and shouldn’t be sidelined as a marketing stunt. Yes there will be a few, and the interesting thing is many of these changes are occurring because genuine changes are happening because of leadership from the middle (one of the hallmarks of conscious capitalism) rather than the top.

Conscious Capitalism: is the dynamic matrix of social, economic, and spiritual trends transforming free enterprise (Megatrends2010 p45) recognized by integrity, transparency; enlightened governance as well as higher social and environment standards; and awareness of how actions will effect constituencies of shareholders and stakeholders.
